There’s fanfic, and then there’s homage.
Fanfic is usually written to satisfy the writer; filled with the fan’s desires of what he’d like to see come to pass. Since the focus is the writer’s satisfaction, it often happens that no one but the writer is satisfied after reading.
Then there’s homage, which is written to honor the original work. Any true fan can appreciate a good homage, and it may even succeed in converting the uninitiated.
Boogeymen is the best homage to horror movies I’ve ever read. Now, in the interest of full disclosure, this was my first foray into writing of this genre, so my word may not be worth much to hardcore fans. But I can say this I laughed a lot and was thoroughly satisfied when I was finally done ripping through it.
The premise of Prisco’s novelette is that two boys inadvertently summon all the scariest creatures in horror history to participate in a battle royale to establish who is the scariest monster of them all. Much blood is shed in a myriad of creative ways. Not only is there plenty of gore for hardcore horror fans, but there’s also an abundance of snappy dialogue, salty insults, and hilarious exposition, which anyone who enjoys witty writing can appreciate.
Be forewarned that there is lots of gore and strong language (as the MPAA puts it). But Boogeymen is a fantastically satisfying read for fans of the genre and fans of a well-crafted tale alike.

So, this was my first splatterpunk. Thank you Brian for making it an incredible experience for me. I did not know what to expect but this was something that was like nothing else I have ever read and that was a great feeling.
First of all the concept was amazing. A huge array of the scariest demons and unhuman things from our best movies that give us nightmares were all on hand. The basis of the novelette being that they all get together to see which demon or monster or killer would win over all others. A fair fight? They are called in waves of their own kind until three are left standing. And it is a gorefest.
If you are going to read this, you better be up to speed on your horrifying creatures and demons and killers. And do not forget your classic nightmare makers and your 80s horror creatures. They all come together in a crazy mix of madness that has your head spinning.
The best part for me is that I was laughing out loud for real. The author has quite a sense of humor and knows just how and when to add it. It just makes the story that much better than it already is.
I actually read this twice. I suggest you do also and the reason that I do is because there is so much going on, you may miss something. And I did miss some key things when I went back over it. But it is just like I say for most movies but especially horror movies - watch them two, three, or four times. You will always find something good you missed.
I do not give out spoilers. I do not believe any review should that is just a personal belief. You should, if you are a good reviewer, be able to get people interested in a book without giving away key elements. That being said, I just want to say watch out for the changing of the point of view in how the story is told, or I should say who is telling it. It brings another dimension, a good one, into the novelette.
As far as splatterpunk, from the definition I got, I expected more blood and guts (or brain or kidneys or etc). But I did speak with the author and we talked about the fine line between horror and splatterpunk. For horror fans, you have to read this! Be ready for something completely new and hopefully as awesome for you as it was for me. For splatterpunk fans, I hope it is enough for you because it is, in my opinion, really good.

I've only seen about half of the movies referenced but I worked at a video store in the 80s so I was able to appreciate all the references. It's a very clever spoof/homage to the genre and an enjoyable read.
